The rights of Roma in Ukraine: Promoting the education of Roma youth

In 2010 and 2011, the Transcarpathian Advocacy and Development Center "Advance," in cooperation with the U.S. Peace Corps and with the financial support of the Democracy Fund of the U.S. Embassy in Ukraine, carried out the project "The rights of Roma in Ukraine: Promoting the education of Roma youth." The project was created to support the development of Roma communities, promote education of Roma youth, and further social and cultural development.

The project for Roma youth involved conducting seminars and workshops on the subject of project management and team building, and included methods to protect and represent the group’s interests, monitoring human rights, and activities for the development of tolerance.

Main activities:

- seminar "Return to School;"

- initiative "Stay in School;"

- mini-grants to schools that participated in the project;

- Creation of the Association "Human rights of Roma in Ukraine."

The project also provided free legal consultation to the target groups based on the Bureau of Community Information through the organization Transcarpathian Advocacy and Development "Advance."
